Dear 2nd Grade Students and Families,

It was lovely to see so many of you yesterday!  Here are your assignments for today.  Click on the underlined links to open each assignment.

Reading:

  1. Read one of these Focus Books about living things.  This text is more challenging: Science A-Z–Amazing Cells.  This text is a medium challenge: Science A-Z–Baobab Trees.  This text is less challenging: Science A-Z–Babies and Parents.  Choose the book that’s a good fit for you as a reader.  You can read the other books too, if you are interested.
  2. Go on Lexia for 20 minutes.

Writing:

  1. Use the Focus Book you just read to complete this assignment: FOCUS BOOK Graphic Organizer.

Math:

  1. Complete the Math Challenge Worksheet–April 15 (1).
  2. Play a familiar math game -OR- go on Symphony Math or Prodigy for 20 minutes.

Social Studies and Science:

  1. Take a walk outside near your house.  Try to identify 4 living things and 4 nonliving things.  Draw and label each thing you find.  You may use this sheet of paper to record your drawings: Living and Nonliving Things Near My House.  Remember, if something was once alive, it is considered a living thing.
  2. Continue working on the My Observation Notebook assignment to track the changes in a plant you found near your house.

Dear 2nd Grade Students and Families,

Good morning!  Here are your assignments for today.  Click on the underlined links to open each assignment.  I will send an email later today with a link to our 3:00 virtual class meeting.

Reading:

  1. Use the version of Living and Nonliving Things that you read yesterday.  Complete the following assignment: Reading A-Z–Living and Nonliving Things–comprehension questions.
  2. Read a good fit FICTION book of your choice for 20 minutes.

Writing: Choose 1 of the options below.

  1. OPTION 1: Think about the FICTION book you are reading now or one you finished recently.  Write an opinion letter about one of the characters in the book.  You may use this paper to help you draft your letter: Opinion Letter Template–character.  To help refresh your memory of the letters we wrote in class, here are a couple of examples: Opinion Letter Examples.
  2. OPTION 2: Revise and edit the opinion letter about a character that you wrote yesterday.  First, look at the Opinion Letter Examples.  Compare one of the examples to your piece of writing.  Did you write the same amount or more?  Look at the evidence you used.  Does it connect with and support your big idea?  Did you include 2 or more sentences to explain each piece of evidence?  Finally, read over your writing again and fix any spelling, capitalization, or punctuation errors.

Math:

  1. Complete the Math Challenge Worksheet–April 14.
  2. Play a familiar math game -OR- go on Symphony Math or Prodigy for 20 minutes.

Social Studies and Science:

  1. Watch this video to learn about plant parts: https://www.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/5dea21b4-6c92-46ff-982c-8650f9429c01/think-garden-plant-structure/.  Find a flowering plant outside.  Draw the plant and label its roots, stem, leaves, and flower and write about what each part does using this sheet: Labeling the Parts of a Plant.
  2. Continue working on the My Observation Notebook assignment to track the changes in a plant you found near your house.

Dear 2nd Grade Students and Families,

I hope you enjoyed the weekend!  Today’s forecast calls for heavy rain and wind.  It’s the perfect day to stay indoors and curl up with a good book.

Here are your assignments for today.  Click on the underlined links to open each assignment.

Reading:

  1. Read the book Living and Nonliving Things.  You will use this book for other assignments later this week.  Choose the version that’s the best fit for you.  For most of you, this version will be a good fit: Reading A-Z–Living and Nonliving Things–more of a challenge.  For some of you, one of these  versions will be a better fit: Reading A-Z–Living and Nonliving Things or Reading A-Z–Living and Nonliving Things–less of a challenge.  A good fit book is a book you can read with understanding on your own, even if you need to use strategies to figure out some of the words.
  2. Read a good fit FICTION book of your choice for 20 minutes.

Writing:

  1. Before the school closure, we worked on writing letters expressing our opinions about the fiction books we read together.  Think about the FICTION book you are reading now or one you finished recently.  Write an opinion letter about one of the characters in the book.  You may use this paper to help you draft your letter: Opinion Letter Template–character.  To help refresh your memory of the letters we wrote in class, here are a couple of examples: Opinion Letter Examples.

Dear 2nd Grade Students and Families,

I was happy to see so many 2nd grade faces during our virtual meeting yesterday!  I can’t wait to see all of you again on Tuesday.

Reading:

  1. Read a good fit book for 20 minutes.  It can be a book you have at your house or a book you read online using a site like Epic.  Our Epic class code is: ika7876.
  2. Go on Lexia for 20 minutes.  I already owe 6 of you certificates for the great work you’ve been doing.  Keep it up!

Writing:

  1. Write a letter to Ms. Gray to tell about something you did this week.  Include details that tell where you were, who you were with, and what you were doing.  Try to add sensory details to show what you saw, heard, and felt.  Here is some familiar paper to use if you would like: Fundations Writing Paper.  Here is Ms. Gray’s letter to you: Ms. Gray’s Letter–My Walk (1).
  2. Thank you for the photos of your life cycle paragraphs.  If you haven’t sent one yet, please do so.  It’s great to see your hard work.

Here are your assignments for today.  Click on the underlined links to open each assignment.  If you do not have a printer, you can read the information on the screen and write down your answers on a sheet of paper.

Reading:

  1. Read a good fit book for 20 minutes.  It can be a book you have at your house or a book you read online using a site like Epic.  Our Epic class code is: ika7876.
  2. Go on Lexia for 20 minutes.

Writing:  This is the same as yesterday’s work.  If you finished it yesterday, you’re all set.

  1. Revise and edit the paragraph you wrote Tuesday about the 4-stage life cycle of an insect.  Use this checklist to help you revise and edit: Revision_Editing Checklists–Insect Life Cycle Paragraph.  Have an adult help you by reading over your paragraph and giving you suggestions about things you might revise or edit.

Complete the World Landforms and Bodies of Water Worksheet (1).  There are maps on the second page of the worksheet or you can use maps you find online.  If you have a world map or an atlas at home, you could use that too.  It might take some thorough searching to find all of the landforms and bodies of water.  Think of it like an I SPY adventure.
  2. If you didn’t work on it yesterday, continue working on the My Observation Notebook assignment to track the changes in a plant you found near your house.

Reading:

  1. Writing:

  1. Use yesterday’s planning sheet (Insect Life Cycle Paragraph–Planning Sheet) to help you write a paragraph about insects that have a 4-stage life cycle.  Be sure to indent your paragraph, to capitalize the beginning of each sentence, and to put a period at the end of each sentence.  Here is some Fundations writing paper to use to write your paragraph: Fundations Writing Paper.

Math:

  1. Complete the Math Challenge Worksheet–April 7.
  2. Play Salute using a regular deck of cards with the 2-10 cards and aces as ones (Salute! Rules) -OR- go on Symphony Math for 20 minutes.

Social Studies and Science:

  1. From the LES homepage, go to PebbleGo.  Click on SOCIAL STUDIES.  Then click on CONTINENTS.  Choose a continent to read about.  You will take some notes about this continent tomorrow.
  2. If you didn’t work on it yesterday, continue working on the My Observation Notebook assignment to track the changes in a plant you’ve found near your house.

Dear 2nd Grade Students and Families,

Today is the birthday of one of our classmates.  Happy birthday, Ari!  I hope you enjoy the day.  Be sure to take plenty of pictures with your new camera.

Here are your assignments for today.  Click on the underlined links to open each assignment.  If you do not have a printer, you can read the book and questions on the screen and write down your answers on a sheet of paper.

Reading:

  1. Read this informational text from Reading A-Z: Reading A-Z–Insect Life Cycle–book.  We will use this book more tomorrow and Wednesday.  Here is a less challenging text that might be a better fit for some 2nd graders: Reading A-Z–The Butterfly Life Cycle–book.
  2. BEFORE you read Insect Life Cycle (or The Butterfly Life Cycle), think about and write down what you already know about the life cycle of an insect.  Then ask 2-3 questions about what you want to know about the life cycle of an insect.  WHILE you read, write down 3-4 facts that you learn.  AFTER you read, write one question that you still want to learn the answer to.  Here is a worksheet you can use to write down your ideas: Reading A-Z–Insect Life Cycle–ask and answer questions worksheet.

Writing:

  1. Use the Reading A-Z book you read to help with this assignment.  You will plan a paragraph about the life cycle of an insect using this sheet: Insect Life Cycle Paragraph–Planning Sheet.  This plan will help you write a paragraph tomorrow.

Math:

  1. Complete the Math Challenge Worksheet–April 6.
  2. If you are able to, spend 20 minutes on Symphony Math.

  1. Read a good fit book or article for 20 minutes.  This can be a book or article you have around the house or something you read online using a site like Epic!
  2. Read this NewsELA article: NEWSELA article–girl helps clean beaches.  Use the text to help you think about the answers to the questions.

Writing:

  1. Sasha Olsen, the girl from the NewsELA article, started a group to clean up beaches near her home in Florida.  Think about a time you did something to help other people, animals, or the environment.  Write a paragraph about what you did to help.  Include specific details about who you were with, where you were, what you did, and why you did it.  Here is a link to some lined paper like the paper we use in class: Fundations Writing Paper.

Math:

  1. Compete the Math Challenge Worksheet–April 3.
  2. If you are able to, spend 20 minutes on Symphony Math.

Social studies:

  1. Make a map of an imaginary place.  Include a title with the name of the place, a map key with at least 5 symbols, and a labeled compass rose.  Make sure your map has at least 1 river, 1 mountain, 1 lake, 1 forest, and 2 towns.

  2. Read a good fit book or article for 20 minutes.  This can be a book or article you have around the house or something you read online using a site like Epic!

Writing:

  1. Write 1 or more paragraphs telling about a recent day.  Include transition words like first, then, next, after that, and finally.  Try to include plenty of details to help your reader understand exactly what you did that day.  Here is a link to some lined paper like the paper we use in class: Fundations Writing Paper.

Math:

  1. Compete the Math Challenge Worksheet–April 2.
  2. If you are able to, spend 20 minutes on Symphony Math.

Science:

  1. Start or continue working on the My Observation Notebook assignment.  What changes have you noticed in your plant this week?
